October 27 Network Outages – More Information

The following is additional information about our network outage on Monday. More information is forth-coming next week about the solution in progress.
A router of our network transport carrier failed within our new major connection between Edmonton and our location in the huge Chicago Internet Exchange at 350 East Cermak.
On Monday during the outage, we did our best to re-route traffic via our other smaller ISPs connections in Edmonton. However routers across the Internet had entries for Alentus to get to our Edmonton data center via that US connection point as the primary route. This caused requests to sites and services to appear down.
As this is not the first time our network carrier has had a service interruption on that line, and the carriers redundant/protected circuit status did not perform as needed, we’re trying to expedite other major connections in our global network to provide a second fail-our redundant connection to Chicago.
The current connection is from Edmonton, East across Canada, then via Toronto to Chicago. We are performing extensive due diligence to ensure the new carrier guarantees this second line utilizes a completely separate physical route to Chicago (such as Edmonton to Seattle, then East across USA to Chicago). We have to make sure the new carrier does not share any part of our current carriers network. Carriers often hand off traffic amongst each others peered connections, therefore getting such a guarantee and network diagrams to prove route independence will take some time.
Our Network Operations team will provide more details and timelines of when the new carrier will have the second line in service, as soon as possible. We are expecting an update by mid-next week.
